What are the largest IDNs in the U.S.?

In order to get a better understanding of the breadth of care that IDNs offer, you need to be familiar with the larger IDNs in the playing field. 

Here are some of the largest IDNs operating in the U.S.: 

HCA Healthcare 

With 211 hospitals and approximately 2,000 sites of care (surgery centers, freestanding emergency rooms, urgent care centers and physician clinics) in 21 states, HCA Healthcare is the largest IDN in the country. Based out of Nashville, Tennessee, HCA has a total net patient revenue of $42.9 billion and more than 283,000 employees. 


Ascension 

Ascension is a large private healthcare system, ranking second in the United States by number of hospitals in 2019. Currently, Ascension has 143 hospitals, over 2,600 sites of care, and more than 40 senior care facilities in 19 states. Headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, has over 150,000 associates and 9,000 employed providers, with a net patient revenue of $22 billion. 


CommonSpirit 

CommonSpirit Health, based out of Chicago, Illinois, has more than 1,000 care sites and 140 hospitals in 21 states across the country. A Catholic, nonprofit healthcare system, CommonSpirit employs approximately 150,000 employees and 25,000 physicians and advanced practice physicians. CommonSpirit has a net patient revenue of about $29 billion. 

 

Trinity Health 

Trinity Health was formed in 2000, eventually becoming one of the largest IDNs in the country with a “family” of 115,000 colleagues and nearly 26,000 physicians and clinicians caring for diverse communities in 25 states. Based in Livonia, Michigan, Trinity is a not-for-profit health system with a net patient revenue of about $15 billion. The Trinity Health system includes 88 hospitals, 131 continuing care locations, the largest PACE program in the country, and 125 urgent care locations. 

 

Community Health Systems 

Community Health Systems is a Fortune 500 company headquartered in Franklin, Tennessee. With a net patient revenue of about $9 billion, CHS employs approximately 90,000 people across the country. In 2014, CHS had around 200 hospitals, but that number declined to around 90 in 2021. 

 

LifePoint Health 

LifePoint Health provides healthcare services in growing regions, rural communities and small towns. Based in Brentwood, Tennessee, LifePoint was established in 1999. LifePoint employs approximately 60,000 people across 151 hospitals in 29 states, which includes 65 community hospital campuses, over 30 rehabilitation and behavioral health hospitals, and 170 additional sites of care across the healthcare continuum. LifePoint has a net patient revenue of $9 billion. 

 

Tenet Healthcare 

Tenet Healthcare is a multinational IDN based in Dallas, Texas. Tenet operates 83 hospitals and over 450 healthcare facilities. Tenet employs over 100,000 people and has a net patient revenue of $13 billion.
