Providence Swedish Health System announced this week it will be reducing its workforce by approximately 296 positions, citing ongoing financial challenges that have strained operations across its central Puget Sound facilities. The reductions represent roughly 3.8% of the system’s workforce and will impact a broad spectrum of roles, including frontline clinical staff, administrative personnel, management, and support functions.
The organization said the reductions will occur across more than 100 departments, affecting both filled and currently unfilled positions, as well as union and non-union roles. The news comes amid rising operational costs, changes in Medicaid funding, commercial insurance denials, and overall declines in procedure volumes. Providence Swedish said these factors have created an urgent need to adapt swiftly to the evolving health-care landscape.
“Our goal is to make thoughtful, strategic decisions to ensure long-term sustainability while continuing to provide high-quality care to our communities,” the health system said in a statement.
In addition to workforce adjustments, Providence Swedish is closing two facilities: the Credena pharmacy at Cherry Hill will cease operations on November 24, and the Swedish Weight Loss Outpatient Clinic in Issaquah will close December 12. The organization emphasized that other capital projects, including the North Patient Tower at First Hill, will continue as planned.
Providence Swedish said it is committed to supporting affected employees through resources for career counseling, job placement, and caregiver assistance. The organization framed the reductions as part of a broader, long-term strategy to maintain stability while navigating financial pressures that many health systems face today.
