Premier defines “large” health systems as those with:

  • --  $5B or more in aggregate of their system hospitals' total operating expenses
  • --  $3B or more in system hospitals' total operating expenses AND system hospitals that reside in three or more U.S. states
  • --  $3B or more in system hospitals' total operating expenses AND system owns five or more short-term, acute care, general hospitals

Premier defines “medium” health systems as those which:

  • --  Own five or more short-term acute care general hospitals AND has $1B or more in aggregate of their system hospitals' total operating expenses
  • --  Have $1.5B or more in system hospitals' total operating expenses

  • --  A small health system is one which did not meet the above criteria to be a large or medium system.
