Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown recently completed a major expansion and renovation project designed to enhance critical care services for patients across the Chattahoochee Valley. Hospital leaders recently celebrated the completion of the $58 million project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony unveiling the newly named Shelby and Wanda Amos Intensive Care Unit.
The 99,038-square-foot expansion adds 43 new intensive care unit beds and includes 68 renovated patient rooms across three nursing units, significantly increasing the hospital’s capacity to care for critically ill patients. The project also modernizes the facility with larger patient rooms and upgraded technology to support advanced care delivery.
According to Piedmont Columbus Regional CEO Scott Hill, the new ICU rooms are approximately two-and-a-half times larger than the previous spaces, providing clinicians with improved workflows and enhanced capabilities to deliver patient-centered care. The expansion comes as the health system continues to address growing healthcare needs throughout the region.
The ICU has been named in honor of Shelby and Wanda Amos following a philanthropic gift from Wanda Amos to the Piedmont Columbus Regional Foundation. Amos said the contribution was inspired by the compassionate care her late husband received while being treated in the hospital’s ICU.
Originally announced in 2024, the project represents one of the largest recent investments in critical care infrastructure in west Georgia. Hospital officials say the expanded facility will help meet increasing demand while providing a state-of-the-art environment for patients, families, and healthcare providers.
