Novant Health partners to expand integrated mental health care
23 Apr, 2026

A new partnership between Amae Health and Novant Health aims to significantly expand access to comprehensive care for individuals living with severe mental illness (SMI) in Charlotte.

Announced April 22, the collaboration will bring Amae Health’s psychiatry-led, “whole-person” outpatient care model to Mecklenburg County, with the first clinic scheduled to open May 18. The facility will treat complex conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder, serving both Medicaid and commercially insured patients.

The model integrates psychiatry, therapy, primary care, nutrition and social support into a single coordinated approach—designed to extend care beyond hospital walls and into community-based settings.

A key component of the partnership is tighter coordination between inpatient and outpatient care. Amae will embed transition planners within Novant Health hospitals to help guide patients from hospitalization into ongoing treatment, with the goal of improving continuity and reducing readmissions.

The initiative builds on Novant Health’s broader push to expand behavioral health services across the region while addressing longstanding gaps in care for people with severe mental illness. Nationally, millions of Americans live with SMI, and many face fragmented care and frequent hospitalizations.

By combining Novant’s regional infrastructure with Amae’s specialized outpatient model, the organizations say they aim to create a more seamless care experience—one focused on long-term stability, earlier intervention and improved patient outcomes.

The Charlotte expansion marks Amae Health’s continued growth in North Carolina, following its presence in Raleigh, and signals increasing momentum around integrated, community-based approaches to behavioral health care
