In a healthcare environment defined by volatility, supply chain leaders have been forced to rethink not only how they operate, but how they lead. For Barket Ali, Principal Director, Sourcing and Business Development at Mayo Clinic, the past several years — particularly the pandemic era—have reshaped his leadership philosophy around flexibility, transparency, and empathy.

“Over the last few years, especially through the pandemic, I would say my leadership style has become a lot more grounded in flexibility, transparency and empathy,” Ali said. “You cannot lead through disruption with a rigid playbook.”

That shift, he explained, was driven by the realities of navigating uncertainty at scale. While data and planning remain essential, Ali emphasized that leadership in disruption requires an equally strong focus on people — understanding their challenges and helping teams stay grounded when conditions are changing quickly.

Rather than relying on long-range, fully mapped strategies, Ali now prioritizes clarity, communication, and trust in execution. “I put more emphasis on giving teams clear direction, staying in close communication and creating enough trust and context so people can make good decisions in the moment,” he said.

His leadership philosophy centers on three core principles: teamwork, communication, and continuous learning. He has shifted toward more decentralized execution, empowering teams with clear goals and the context needed to act decisively. Open and frequent communication, he noted, is essential during disruption to maintain alignment and encourage innovation. And perhaps most importantly, he views disruption itself as a catalyst for growth.

“I view disruption as a chance to grow and encourage teams to see thoughtful pivots as a strategic strength, not a setback,” Ali said.

Today, Ali brings more than 35 years of experience in sourcing, contracting, and supply chain leadership to a multifaceted role at Mayo Clinic. He leads international contracting development across the Asia Pacific region — including Japan, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, and South Korea — focused on supplier optimization, contract consolidation, and improving patient experience. He also leads Mayo Clinic’s Medical Device and Clinical Laboratory Sourcing and Contracting team and serves as a Principal at Inspirity Health Partners, where he focuses on creating value through supply chain innovation.

Across these responsibilities, Ali said the most meaningful aspect of his work remains consistent: building strong teams and driving meaningful change alongside clinicians and organizational leaders.

Before joining Mayo Clinic, Ali spent nearly a decade with Allina Health System in Minneapolis and another decade with the Aga Khan University Hospital Network in Karachi, Pakistan —experiences that, he said, shaped his global perspective and approach to collaboration and long-term value creation.

When asked what sustains him through the most difficult days, Ali pointed to a personal grounding philosophy. “My motivation on difficult days is rooted in Buddhist philosophy, which teaches that challenges are not punishments but opportunities for growth,” he said. “Hard moments help build resilience and deepen inner strength.”

For Ali, that mindset extends directly into leadership: disruption is inevitable, but how teams respond — together, with clarity and adaptability — defines what comes next.
