Kaiser Permanente recently announced a joint venture with Renown Health of northern Nevada to establish a new health‑plan and outpatient care delivery system in northern Nevada beginning in 2026.
Together the organizations will form a joint venture in which Kaiser will acquire a majority interest in Renown’s insurance‑arm, Hometown Health, while Renown continues to operate its health system.
The stated goal: bring “high‑quality, value‑based care” and expand access to affordable coverage for individuals, families and employers in the region.
The new setup will cover “open enrollment in 2026” for employers and individuals in northern Nevada.
Kaiser Permanente and Renown will open a multispecialty ambulatory health system, with convenient locations in central and northern Reno including diagnostics, pharmacy and outpatient services.
Northern Nevada (including the Reno area) is growing faster than the U.S. overall, with increasing business and population activity, according to a release.
Current options in the region will now have new competition or enhanced offerings — Kaiser’s “value‑based care model” will be paired with a local provider’s network, potentially improving affordability and care convenience.
Local provider Renown will remain independent and continue accepting all current insurance plans, so this isn’t a takeover that forces existing plans to disappear — a point the organizations emphasize.
With this announcement, Kaiser Permanente is making a strategic move into northern Nevada in partnership with a strong local nonprofit health system. If all goes according to plan, by 2026 northern Nevada residents and employers will have a new care‑and‑coverage option that blends national scale with local delivery. It’s a development worth watching for its potential to reshape health‑care access in the region.
