HCA Healthcare Using AI to Redefine Patient Safety
06 Nov, 2025

A recent American Hospital Association blog examined how HCA Healthcare is embracing a next‑generation safety strategy that goes beyond traditional reactive tracking of adverse events. The U.S. health system is borrowing lessons from high‑reliability industries (like aviation, manufacturing and the military) and combining them with artificial intelligence (AI) to proactively identify risk—and improve outcomes.

Key Highlights

  • Safety is foundational: According to Dr. Randy Fagin, HCA’s chief quality officer, “You cannot achieve regulatory compliance without a foundation of safety. Absent safety, your clinical outcomes cannot be what they need to be.”
  • Learning from other industries: The organization studied safety practices at places like a GE CT‑manufacturing plant, DuPont Chemical and a U.S. Army special‑ops aviation regiment. They’re applying those insights in hospital settings.
  • AI as an upstream force multiplier: Rather than just logging falls or infections after they occur, HCA is building AI‑driven digital markers to detect near misses and risk indicators before harm happens.
  • Governance matters: A robust, multidisciplinary AI governance framework is in place—bringing together clinical, operations, finance, marketing and supply‑chain leaders—to evaluate each use‑case for impact, feasibility and patient experience.
