Geisinger announced it is rolling out advanced ultraviolet (UV) disinfection systems across its hospital campuses to enhance infection prevention. These devices complement manual cleaning and are specifically used in patient rooms previously occupied by individuals with infectious illnesses.
"Bringing UV disinfection technology into our hospitals is a powerful step forward in protecting our patients,” said Mark Shelly, M.D., medical director of infection prevention. “It’s not just about adding new tools. It’s about strengthening our commitment to safety and quality and doing everything we can to prevent hospital-acquired infections. A visibly clean surface is just the beginning. Because germs are invisible, they’re susceptible to UV light. This technology helps us take another meaningful step toward becoming a high-reliability organization, where safety is at the center of everything we do."
The technology features include:
- High-speed efficacy: Each device disinfects rooms in just 12–30 minutes, depending on size.
- Intelligent operation: They track use and adjust UV light intensity to reach shadowed or hard-to-access areas.
- Safety protocols: Operated only by trained Environmental Services staff, and rooms are clearly marked during UV treatment
After successful pilot programs at Geisinger Medical Center and Wyoming Valley Medical Center, 16 units are being introduced systemwide. These UV devices are effective against a wide range of pathogens—including C. diff, MRSA, VRE, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Klebsiella, influenza A, and norovirus
