Geisinger announced that its South Wilkes-Barre hospital underwent considerable renovation this year to enhance patient care and address growing community needs in Luzerne County.

The emergency department (ED) has nearly doubled in size, increasing from 10 to 19 treatment areas. This expansion includes remodeled triage and waiting areas, aiming to improve patient flow and reduce wait times. The enhancements address the hospital's previous capacity challenges since its reopening in 2018.

In late March, 20 new inpatient beds were opened on the fifth floor, increasing the hospital's capacity for medical-surgical care. This addition helps in moving patients through appropriate levels of care more efficiently and reduces bottlenecks in patient transitions.

A radiology upgrade was completed, which began in late 2024 with the addition of a new mammography unit and concluded with the installation of a new computed tomography (CT) scanner in July. These upgrades enhance diagnostic capabilities and support timely patient care. 

“These expansions of emergency medicine, inpatient care and radiology allow us to care for patients at the right time in the right place,” said Karlyn Paglia, M.D., chief medical officer of Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center and Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre. “The quicker we can get our patients treated or admitted, the quicker we can get them safely discharged and back to the comfort of their homes, opening space for the next patients who need hospital-based care.”
