Banner Health announced the next step in its multi-year investment plan to “transform its service offerings in Northern Colorado to meet the evolving health care needs of the growing communities in Larimer and Weld counties,” the company said in an announcement.
Banner Health is transitioning its Loveland facility—Banner McKee Medical Center—into a specialty hospital that will be part of the Banner North Colorado Medical Center campus. This newly envisioned facility will be anchored by the Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center and will offer a robust set of services, including inpatient and outpatient surgery, rehabilitation programs, a cardiac cath lab, interventional radiology, mammography, and specialty care clinics. The emergency department at McKee will be closed as of November 5, 2025.
Emergency services will shift to nearby facilities to better match community needs
Emergency care will continue uninterrupted through Banner’s other four hospitals in the region:
- Banner North Colorado Medical Center (Greeley)
- Banner Fort Collins Medical Center
- Banner East Morgan County Hospital (Brush)
- Banner Sterling Regional MedCenter
Additionally, there’s a Banner Urgent Care location just 1.4 miles from McKee. This adjustment comes in response to declining emergency room volumes at McKee—currently only 25% bed usage—and the fact that 88% of its surgeries are outpatient, underscoring the need for a reallocation of resources
These changes are part of a broader, multi-year strategic plan to realign Banner’s service offerings with the evolving needs of fast-growing Larimer and Weld counties. Over the next three years, Banner plans to make significant capital investments in new and expanded services across Northern Colorado.
The organization is also bolstering its clinical leadership in the region by recruiting nationally recognized specialists in areas such as orthopedic joint replacement, cardiovascular care, neurosurgical oncology, vascular surgery, and reconstructive micro-vascular surgery.
